Where is Estepona, Spain?

Estepona is a town and municipality in the Costa del Sol, located just 45 minutes from Gibraltar International Airport.  Dwarfed by the mighty Sierra Bermeja Mountains, Estepona is famous for more than 20km of sandy beaches, friendly locals and year-round Andalusian sunshine.

A selection of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets, fabulous restaurants and bars and a charming historical centre make Estepona a great base for any golf holiday.

Estepona has 11 golf courses within a 20-minute drive of the town. If you’re staying in Estepona, you have the option to head East or West. Expand your travel time to 30 minutes and you open up golf courses in Marbella and Sotogrande.

Estepona Golf Courses to the West

Valle Romano Golf Resort

Head out of Estepona on the AP-7 and you’ll come across Valle Romano Golf Resort. Designed by Cabell B Robinson, this USGA-certified course offers plenty of challenging holes and will test low handicapper's range of skills. Valle Romano has hosted the European Challenge Tour events in the past. However, there are five different tee positions, ensuring the course is playable for higher handicappers and those new to the game. There is also accommodation available on-site, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking for a golf resort in Estepona.

Estepona Golf

Situated just one mile due west is Estepona Golf, one of the cheapest golf courses in Estepona offering exceptional value for money. This José Luis López designed course serves up 18 holes amongst the Sierra Bermeja mountains with stunning views of the Mediterranean.

Finca Cortesin Golf Club

Finca Cortesin Golf Club needs little introduction. Host of the Solheim Cup in 2023, you’ll find Finca Cortesin within many top ten lists for the best golf courses in Spain (our own included).

Designed by Cabell B Robinson and landscaped by Gerald Huggan, Finca Cortesin is renowned for its attention to detail from the moment you step onto the premises. The green fee includes a complementary buggy or trolley as well as range balls to use on the outstanding practice facilities.

For golfers looking to extend their stay, Finca Cortesin Golf Resort is regarded as one of the best hotels in Spain, cementing its reputation as one of the best golf resorts in Spain.

Dona Julia Golf Club

Located adjacent to Finca Cortesin, Dona Julia Golf Club. Opened in 2007, Dona Julia is an excellent all-round golf course in Estepona, suitable for low and high handicappers alike. A particular highlight is the 8th, which offers superb views of the Mediterranean and surrounding countryside. Green fees are reasonable too, with a round costing from as little as €67.

Estepona Golf Courses to the East

Villa Padierna Golf Club

Head 15 minutes east from Estepona and you’ll arrive at Villa Padierna Golf Club. Home to three golf courses, befitting all ranges of abilities. Guests can also stay onsite at Anantara Villa Padierna Golf Resort, meaning it’s possible to spend your entire golf holiday in Estepona without needing to travel anywhere else.

For Beginners and high handicappers, opt for the Tramores Course, which offers a mixture of par-4 and par-5 holes, with the back nine predominantly made up of par-3’s.

The Flamingos Course is perfect for mid-handicappers, serving up a variety of holes, with stunning views from many of the Citrus and olive-lined fairways and has played host to the Women’s Spanish Open in previous years.

Alferini represents the greatest challenge of the three courses and is well suited to lower handicappers. Precision is key to score well at Alferini, with tight fairways and plenty of traps thoughtfully positioned to catch out any errand shots.

Marbella Club Golf Resort

Famed for its spectacular views of the Sierra, Costa and North African coastline, Marbella Club Golf Resort is one for the golfing scrapbook. Make sure you have your camera at the ready to take some stunning photographs.

Set away from the tourist hotspots, Marbella Club Golf Resort is one of the quieter clubs in the area. As a result, guests can expect a leisurely round of golf here. The well-thought-out course design will challenge even the lowest handicappers, with a smattering of opportunities to get some birdies on the scorecard.

El Paraíso Golf Club

El Paraíso Golf Club, designed by the legend Gary Player, has a reputation as one of the friendliest golf courses in the Costa del Sol. The club opened its doors in 1973 and continues to welcome low and high handicappers in equal measure.

The mixture of wide fairways and meandering streams make for an excellent round of golf, allowing players to let rip with the driver, but also utilise precision with the irons.

This is demonstrated on the sixth, El Paraíso’s signature hole, where a dogleg left par-5, incorporates fairway bunkers, lakes, and a two-tiered green that makes for a tough yet rewarding hole if all shots come together.

Atalaya Golf and Country Club

There are two courses available to play at Atalaya Golf and Country Club, The New Course and The Old Course. Both offer a peaceful round fo golf amidst beautiful flora and fauna, including wild flowers, mature olive and carob trees. The lake that covers the fourth hole on The New Course is a particular highlight, offering wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
