The Font del Llop which translates to “wolves watering hole” course blends in perfectly with the surrounding Spanish landscape. Native plants and trees decorate all 18 holes, while boulders and slopes create a gentle route through the valley in which the course is located. A river also flows through the course, creating a natural golf hazard.
Located close to Alicante Airport, there isn’t much residential area surrounding this course, which gives it a remote appeal. It also makes the course and the backdrop highly picturesque. If you want to play scenic golf in Costa Blanca, this course is a must-visit.
It was opened in 2010 as the collaborative effort of Marco Martin and Blake Stirling, who share decades’ worth of golf course design experience. Notably, the course takes inspiration from both Scottish and American golf courses in terms of layout, shape, and moulding.
The Font del Llop is considered to be in the top 10 golf courses in Costa Blanca due to its scenery as well as its demand for technical ability. Some holes are long and ascend gradually uphill; others are short but are flanked by ponds and other hazards.
The 9th hole is the course’s signature and also one of the most challenging. This par 5 is uphill, split in two by a stream, and has various bunkers and pine trees found throughout. This contrasts with the 10th, which is a long downhill par 4.
The greens are well-maintained and the trees and vegetation are vibrant and healthy looking all year round. If you’re staying at one of the Costa Blanca golf resorts but would like to try something a bit more traditional and challenging, pay a visit to Font del Llop.
Font del Llop is located just 25 minutes from the City of Alicante with a wealth of bars, restaurants and hotel options. The international Airport is just 15 minutes from the golf course providing a very convenient travel time. The coastal resort of Arenals del Sol is just 25 minutes away with some stunning sandy beaches available for a relaxing getaway. The neighbouring courses of Alenda & El Plantio are just 10 and 20 minutes away providing some variety in golf options nearby.
