Son Gual opened back in 2008 and remains one of the best golf resorts in the Balearics. It was designed by Thomas Himmell, who is a three time amateur champion.
Golf holidays in the Balearics often revolve around this course, which is included in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe list. This 18-hole champion course is 6,050 metres in length and features gently undulating fairways. While the course can be walked, buggies are allowed.
The first hole is a par 4 and measures 420 metres. Its length deems it driver worthy, although you need to be cautious of the row of bunkers found on the left hand side.
Interestingly, the second hole is also a par 4 and also measures exactly 420 metres. Its nickname is “Sandy Lane” and it’s easy to see why. Right in front of the tees lies a huge cluster of sand bunkers. Bunkers not only flank the rest of the hole but a deep bunker can also be found in the middle of the fairway.
Hole 4 is the first par 5 and comes with a nasty water hazard right at the back of the putting green. Water hazards can also be found on holes 5 and 6. The course features several signature holes, but the most scenic and memorable has to be the 15th, which boasts a panoramic view over the entire course.
Like most other Balearic golf courses, Son Gual has plenty of artificial additions to the layout and vegetation. The creeks and lakes were added during the construction, as were over a thousand aged olive trees which give the course a magnificent mediterranean feel.
Golf Son Gual is located in the heart of the Southern area of Mallorca just 20 minutes from the capital of Palma. Only 10 minutes from the famous beach resort of S’Arenal and 15-20 minutes away from many smaller beach resorts, Golf Son Gual is incredibly well connected to a wide selection of bars, restaurant and different accommodation options. The other big draw of Son Gual is it’s proximity to the Airport, just 5 minutes drive and you’re back in the departures lounge! The neighbouring course of Golf Maoiris is only 20 minutes away offering a different challenge nearby.
