Designed by Peter Ellis and Clive Clark and opened in 1992, the Links course at La Hacienda is the only true links course in this part of Spain and one of the best in the Sotogrande area. The proximity to the sea means the majority of the holes wind their way down the coastline alongside the beautiful sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol. This provides spectacular views over the Mediterranean, across to North Africa and down to the imposing rock of Gibraltar.  The course setup gives impressive views of the rock from many holes, protruding up into the Spanish sky and framed with breathtaking sunsets.
The course position also creates challenging weather conditions, with brisk winds coming in off the sea and adding an extra challenge aside from the difficult layout and well placed bunkers and water features.
The links course was redesigned and fully renovated in 2021 by famous golf architect Kurtis Bowman. This enabled the management to create a fully sustainable, pristine golf environment which was rightfully given the prestigious title of the ‘Best golf course in Spain 2023’ .
The specialist features of the course include some of the largest putting surfaces in Spain, shared greens, wide fairways and gently sloping transitions between deep and tricky bunkers. All tee boxes were redesigned and provide some of Spain’s most impressive tee shot views, the greens were also remodelled and spectacular views over North Africa, Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea are provided from each and every one.
La Hacienda Links Course is a par 72 course divided into 5 par 5’s , 8 par 4’s and 5 par 3’s. The distances and slope ratings are as follows:
White – 5841 yards – 132 slope
Yellow – 5514 yards – 128 slope
Blue – 5030 yards – 123 slope
Red – 4634 yards – 121 slope
La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Course signature hole
The 5th hole is utterly spectacular and can be the only choice for signature hole. A par 5 measuring a nice solid 500 yards, but stretching alongside the coastline and offering possibly the most stunning view of Gibraltar from the entire course.
The tee box is very elevated and gives the impression of teeing off into the abyss, with the Mediterranean sea lurking invitingly below and the sandy coastline extending off into the distance towards the rock.
A steady and precise drive is needed to setup a good second. Reaching over 240 yards is a requirement to conquer the fairway bunker and anything pushed right will roll down into the lake. A wayward drive left will end up over the cart path, OB and forever lost to the thick clifftop brush.
If the ball placement off the tee is good enough, then it’s possible to take on the gorge massively cutting the hole in two left to right. The left side of the hole funnels in, and the beachside scrubland makes the approach to the green much thinner and less forgiving. Protected both short and long, left and right the 3 greenside bunkers seem hungry for anything but the most precise second shot.
Another 200 yard plus shot is required to land on the dancefloor or laying up will also bring a 4th bunker into play on the right hand side. The stunning rock of Gibraltar is impeding your vision on every single shot out in the distance and stealing your concentration.
The green is vast and undulating, a mammoth challenge to land close and provide an option to only 1 or 2 putt. This hole will live on long in the memory regardless of the final outcome!
To play this course is without doubt a bucket list experience and truly one of the finest courses in the world let alone Spain.
