Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is amongst Europes elite courses, shrouded in history and has hosted some of Spains most famous golfers and prestigious tournaments.
Designed in the early 1960’s alongside the urbanisation of Sotogrande, the club was the brainchild of Joseph McMicking who envisaged building a socially aware club that was environmentally stable and would last generations.
He used the world famous designer Robert Trent Jones who also shared the future vision of golf in Spain. The course was his first in Europe and also was the first course in Spain to use Bermuda 419 and have the first ever fully automatic irrigation system. The technological advancements didn’t end with the course and design, the clubhouse was inaugurated in 1964 by the famous Spanish architect Luis Gutierrez Soto adding another element of class to this golf haven. A final testament to this quality golf course was the title of ‘Real’ given by the King of Spain Juan Carlos I in 1994.
Golf itself here is considered a difficult challenge even for the professionals. Over the years some of golf’s biggest stars have battled at Sotogrande and the course stands up to even the most proficient of golfers. However the RTJ design enables golfers of average ability to equally take something enjoyable from the stunning course.
Long elevated tee boxes, wide accommodating fairways and over 100 bunkers mainly around the greens give this course a bit of everything. The biggest challenge has to be the speed of the greens, very fast and protected by the bunkers, a precise approach shot is needed to have a look at anything par or better. The course has a par of 72 and measures 6492 yards and split into the following hole designations 4 par 3’s, 10 par 4’s and 4 par 5’s. The yardages and slopes are as follows:
Black – 6492 yards – 142 slope
White 6210 yards – 141 slope
Yellow 5856 yards – 38 slope
Red 5020 yards – 131 slope
