To play Valderrama is to truly experience one of the finest courses in the world. Created in 1975 and originally known as Las Aves the course was designed by Robert Trent Jones who used 3 time British open winner Henry Cotton as golf director and then passed the torch to the world famous Tony Jacklin.
In 1985 the course was finally ready and redesigned and remodelled by Jones, it was officially opened and renamed to Valderrama in reference to the name of the original estate. In 1997 as testament to just how good the course was and the ultimate accolade, Valderrama was chosen to host the first ever Ryder cup outside of the British Isles.
The future of the famous championship course was solidified on the pro circuit when it was chosen to host LIV events from 2022 onwards, the only tournament schedule to be hosted in continental Europe.
Another famous feature of Valderrama is the course’s dedication to environmental sustainability. Since 1991 an Audubon certificate in environmental management has been held and different projects to maintain this level of sustainability are constantly undertaken. The diversity of flora and fauna on Valderrama can officially designate the course as a wildlife sanctuary.
With all the info above it’s clear to see that Valderrama is above all else is probably one of the most perfectly manicured courses in world golf. Pristine in all aspects and faultless in its design. With a slope rating of over 140 off both the whites and the blacks it also offers a very challenging test of high level golfers. The facilities are also spectacular with a modern clubhouse, exquisite dining and a truly welcoming environment.
The course itself is set up as a par 71, divided into the following hole layout: 4 par 3’s, 11 par 4’s and 3 par 5’s. The yardages and slopes are as follows:
Black – 6392 yards – 147 slope
White – 5921 yards – 142 slope
Yellow – 5520 yards – 136 slope
Red – 5322 yards – 142 slope
One of the most justifiably expensive tee times, however as a package to come and experience a round or 2 at Valderrama must be considered a once in a lifetime dream ticket.
