San Lorenzo Golf Course Review

San Lorenzo Golf Course is situated in the heart of the Algarve’s most exclusive area; the Quinta do Lago estate. This spectacular course opened its doors to golf enthusiasts in 1988 and has since earned a reputation as one of the most desirable golfing destinations in Europe.

San Lorenzo Golf Course is located just a stone’s throw away from Vilamoura, in the southeast of Quinta do Lago. The course borders the Ria Formosa Estuary, a protected natural reserve and habitat of over 70 bird species.

As you tee off on this course, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the estuary and the surrounding natural landscape.

Many of the course’s holes play alongside stunning saltwater marshes, which comprise a significant portion of the landscape. As you play, you will be awed by the beauty of the natural surroundings and the challenging yet enjoyable layout of the course.

Despite the recent wildfires that devastated the area, San Lorenzo Golf Course still retains its charm and allure. With some further investment, this course can be restored to its former glory.

In 2017, Golf World magazine named San Lorenzo Golf Course as one of the top 15 golf resorts in continental Europe, along with its sister hotel Dona Filipa. And it’s easy to see why. This course offers an unrivalled golfing experience that is both challenging and rewarding.

Course Design

San Lorenzo Golf Course is a masterpiece of golf architecture, designed by the legendary American golf architect Joseph Lee and built by Rocky Roquemore.

This stunning course boasts Bermuda grass fairways, providing golfers with a smooth and consistent playing surface.

The course is set amidst rolling sandy land, sweeping over slopes that are well-wooded with umbrella pine. The combination of the natural landscape and the thoughtful course design provides golfers with a unique and unforgettable golfing experience.

San Lorenzo Golf Course is designed to combine length, strategic difficulty, and enjoyable, scenic golf in equal measure.

The course design makes full use of the inland lake, which is a central feature of the course. This feature not only adds to the beauty of the course but also presents a challenge for golfers, as they must navigate their shots around the water.

The course is a perfect blend of challenging and enjoyable holes, each with its unique character and design. From the challenging par 5s to the picturesque par 3s, San Lorenzo Golf Course offers something for golfers of all levels.

Course Layout

As you approach the San Lorenzo Clubhouse, the figure of eight course layout will immediately capture your attention.

Starting on the front nine, golfers will experience water hazards on many of the holes.

The course opens with an inviting par 5 measuring 495 yards (452 metres) from the competition tees.

Hole 5, the shortest par 3 at 141 yards (129 metres) from the yellow tees, boasts an incredible backdrop of the beach and the sea beyond.
Meanwhile, the sixth hole, a 421 yards (386 metres) par 4, is the toughest on the front nine with a stroke index of 1. Golfers must be accurate off the tee as the estuary borders the hole on one side and dense shrubs on the other.

The seventh hole, a 377 yards (345 metres) par 4, plays from an elevated tee overlooking the Ria Formosa estuary. Golfers must watch out for any slice as the green is almost entirely surrounded by water.

Hole 8 is one of the most memorable par 5s, measuring 541 yards (495 metres) from the competition tees, as it borders the largest of the inland lakes. The third shot must carry water to a tight but beautifully positioned green.

The ninth hole brings golfers back to the San Lorenzo Clubhouse and requires a demanding drive up a gentle valley.

As golfers move onto the back nine, the course layout takes them back towards the Atlantic Ocean. Hole 10, a par 5 measuring 531 yards (486 metres), requires an impressive drive across the smaller of the two lakes.

The eleventh hole provides a wonderful view of the mountains that provide the perfect backdrop for an undulating green.

Holes 12-16 see golfers making their way back towards the Atlantic Ocean. The twelfth is the most demanding hole on the course with a rather daunting chasm running along the left of the fairway.

The sixteenth is where players will encounter the hardest of the par 3s, measuring a full 197 yards (180 metres). There’s not much green to work with here, so you’ll need to be accurate with shot placement.

The Ria Formosa estuary comes into play on the 17th and 18th holes, bringing golfers back inland. The seventeenth is a stunningly beautiful hole with the lake in play from tee to green all along the left side.

Golfers must hit a good drive to leave no problem with the second to an inviting green. The eighteenth hole is a sneaky 400-yard plus par 4 with water all the way up the left and a semi-island green.

Golfers must weigh up the risk and reward on this classic finishing hole.

The Greens

The Greens at San Lorenzo Golf Course are well maintained and offer golfers a true putting surface with subtle breaks that will test even the most experienced of players.
They are of medium size and are a perfect complement to the challenge presented by the course’s layout.

While the greens at San Lorenzo may appear straightforward at first glance, golfers need to pay close attention to the slopes and contours if they want to score well.

Putts that look straight can quickly turn in another direction, making for some nerve wracking  moments.

San Lorenzo Signature Hole

The signature hoe at San Lorenzo golf course is undoubtedly the 18th. They say good things come to those who wait and nothing could be closer to the truth when playing here.

This beautiful par 4 measures over 400 yards, and the water that borders the left-hand side will test the nerves of even the most seasoned golfer.

The semi-island green is beautiful and requires a precise approach shot, played across the water to a tiny targeted green.

This classic risk-and-reward finish is the perfect way to bring your round at San Lorenzo to a close.

To Conclude

San Lorenzo Golf Course is a stunning course with a clever design that uses the natural landscape and lakes.

While there is some investment needed to restore it to its former glory, it is still a course that any golfer would be remiss to miss out on.

With challenging water hazards, undulating pine woodland, and spectacular views, San Lorenzo offers some of the best holes you may ever play, particularly 17 and 18

The greens are subtle but true, making for a satisfying round of golf. Overall, this course is a must-visit for any golf enthusiast visiting Quinta do Lago.
