Gancedo has achieved this at Santo António, creating a blend of undulating fairways, deep ravines, and carefully placed water hazards. There is plenty of variety here, which promises to hold your attention for the entire round.
It’s not just us mere mortals that have the privilege of experiencing Santo António. In the past, this wonderful course has hosted the Europro Tour, and it’s not hard to see why. With its breathtaking scenery and many challenging holes, there is plenty to test even the lowest handicapper.
Santo António isn’t a particularly long course. The championship tees measure 6426 yards, a distance that’s perfectly manageable for mid-handicappers in a bit of form. The yellow tees measure 5781 yards, and the red tees are 5051 yards.
Even though the course isn’t long, given the undulating terrain, we recommend hiring a buggy when playing here. Some of the inclines can be difficult for those who are unsteady on their feet.
Men require a handicap of 28 to play at Santo António, and although this isn’t always asked for, it’s best to have a copy of your certificate just in case.
The Course Layout
The first nine holes are set in a valley that cuts through the countryside, creating undulating fairways that will put your skills to the test.
The back nine includes several holes with water hazards. There are some strategically placed lakes you’ll want to avoid at all costs to ensure a low scorecard at the end of the round.
As you make your way through the course, be sure to take in the spectacular views of the village of Figueira and the sea from the 14th hole, followed by the dramatic tee shot of the 15th.
Santo António Signature Hole
The signature hole at Santo António is 5th hole. It’s a 112-meter par 3, and hitting the green is a must, as sharp slopes on all sides make par difficult if the green is missed.
While visiting the area, be sure to explore the nearby Costa Vicentina nature reserve and Sagres, one of the most important places in Portuguese and European history.
From the challenging fairways to the stunning scenery, this course is a must-play for any avid golfer visiting the Algarve and its wonderful golf courses.
