[0] => Opened in 2010 and designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, El Monacilla Golf provides some of the finest golf facilities in Andalusia.
Long holes with wide stretching fairways intertwined between lush pine trees and vibrant blue lakes finishing on fast tricky greens make this course a real challenge. Mid level golfers should use the shorter tees as Olazabal has designed a long course of over 6000 metres from the whites and almost 7000 off the tips! Errant shots are punished with hazards dotted strategically around the course and to walk off La Monacilla with a good score is a true achievement.
La Monacilla Golf is a par 72 course and split into the following hole designations, 4 par 3's, 10 par 4's and 4 par 5's. The yardages and slope ratings are as follows:
Black - 6886 Metres - Slope - 132
White - 6436 Metres - Slope - 132
Yellow - 5925 Metres - Slope - 129
Blue - 5516 Metres - Slope - 125 M / 127 F
Red - 5114 Metres - Slope - 116 M / 124 F
Pink - 4719 Metres - Slope - 120 F
Signature hole at La Monacilla Golf
The 7th hole is widely considered the signature hole. A long par 5 with a dogleg left measuring 485 yards off the White tees the true challenge of the 7th comes from the water.
The hole is flanked by not one, not two but three lakes splitting the fairway and covering on both left and right sides. A drive of more than 250 yards is required to conquer the stream that links the lakes directly cutting the fairway off from left to right. Once you've landed either short or over the stream you then require an even more precise second to lay up or go for the green.
Landing 200+ yards with the second requires pinpoint accuracy since the second lake on the left covers the entire side of the fairway and right up to the edge of the green. Heading left will be a lost ball into the water and pushing right of the fairway means landing in one of the three bunkers covering anything other than perfection.
For those of you laying up, the third is a simple flick onto the green but again avoiding sand right or long and water left. This par 5 features everything we love and hate about a golf hole. A par is a very very good score here!
La Monacilla Golf has fantastic facilities, a super modern and chic clubhouse and the course itself is one of the finest challenges you can encounter in the entire Costa de la Luz. Anyone walking off here with a good score deserves a crisp cold cerveza in the clubhouse or a rewarding meal in one of the many bars and restaurants just 30 minutes away on the coast.
