Castro Marim Golf Course Review

Nestled north of the picturesque town of Castro Marim in the eastern Algarve lies the 27-hole Castro Marim Golf Course.

The course boasts breathtaking views of the River Guadiana and the picturesque hillsides of Spain, making it a must-play destination for golfers looking to test their skills while enjoying the natural beauty of the region.

Course Design

Castro Marim Golf Course was the first course to be built in this part of the world, designed by the late English West Country professional, Terry Murray. The course comprises three nine-hole loops: the Grouse, the Atlantic, and the Guadiana.

The original course, which included the Atlantic and Guadiana nines, opened for play in 2001, and the 18-hole layout was joined seven years later by the Grouse nine.

While the Atlantic and Guadiana courses wind through pine-clad hillsides, the Grouse course offers stunning inland hill views.

Course Information

Castro Marim Golf Course offers a range of challenges for golfers of all levels.

The Atlantic/Grouse Course has a competition length of 6042 yards, with Yellow Tees measuring 5750 yards and Red Tees 5193 yards.

The Grouse/Guadiana Course stretches to 6315 yards from the Competition Tees, with Yellow Tees at 5975 yards and Red Tees at 5372 yards.

The Guadiana/Atlantic Course has a length of 5758 yards from the Competition Tees, with Yellow Tees measuring 5404 yards and Red Tees at 5014 yards.

Castro Marim Slope Rating

The Atlantic Course has a slope rating of 127 from the Competition Tees, with Yellow Tees at 127 and Red Tees at 125.

The Grouse Course has a slope rating of 130 from the Competition Tees, with Yellow Tees at 125 and Red Tees at 123.

The Guadiana Course has a slope rating of 124 from the Competition Tees, with Yellow Tees at 119 and Red Tees at 119.

The Greens

Castro Marim Golf Course is renowned for its well-maintained greens, which are both fast and true. Several of the greens are elevated and protected by bunkers, and the tricky undulations will keep even the most experienced golfer on their toes.

Castro Marim Signature Hole

The signature hole at Castro Marim Golf Course is undoubtedly the par five 4th hole, which offers a challenging yet exhilarating experience.

The tee shot is played from an elevated tee to a low-lying fairway, and the drive needs to be carefully thought through.

The hole doglegs left, with a lake lying beyond the dogleg on the right of the fairway, adding an extra element of difficulty to an already challenging hole.

To Conclude

Castro Marim Golf Course is not only a place to test your golfing skills but also a haven for wildlife.

Lucky golfers have spotted wild boar, birds, rabbits, and even the elusive Iberian Lynx on the Grouse Course during early morning rounds.

With its stunning views, unique design, and challenging holes, Castro Marim Golf Course is a must-play destination for golfers visiting the eastern Algarve.
